About
I am a PhD candidate in Technical Communication and Experience Design at Old Dominion University. My research examines the roles of participants in co-creative gaming networks. I am especially interested in how those roles are impacted by the policies and technologies that try to shape participatory agency, and the efforts of participants to better understand their relationships with other network actors. My approach is interdisciplinary, merging theory and practice from several fields to explore ways to design for the negotiation of participatory agency in networks.
I am also a research assistant in the CeME Lab at ODU. Our research projects include examining the design and usability of social web tools for crowdsourcing disaster information; the design of collaborative editing, annotation, and mark-up tools for multi-media web texts; and the practices of social web participants in gathering, contextualizing, and distributing information.
Currently, I am writing my dissertation on the user experience of participation in social web ecosystems while putting my research into practice as an Information Architect and UX Designer at The Nerdery. Find out more about that work here: http://nerdery.com/people#dj
